If you go through some headshots over the internet, you will see thousands of great ones, but it is probably because the best ones were chosen out of hundreds of shots in a photo session. You have to wonder what the actor really looks like. But if you run across a selection of very good shots and they happen to be from the same photographer, you may have found the one for you.
There should be compliments and praise. You will need this to bring to the sometimes tedious shoot. Your photographer should display a range of patience. This will also be important to be at ease with him or her during the shoot. And they should also let you know what they intend to portray in order to get you the roles you desire.
Your photographer will also let you know about his or her procedure in getting just the right shot. It should not be a matter of how many but rather focused on quality. He should tell you to bring different outfits for different looks. Your comp card will hold up to four distinctly different looks for agents, directors, and producers to admire and consider.
Ideally, the photographer will begin with little or no makeup. His lighting will take care of certain flaws. He will be able to go through your selected outfits and match them up to different looks that he will have in mind for you. As the photography session progresses, more makeup and different looks should be applied. The end should have you looking the most made up, and perhaps the prettiest, whether male or female, however without a heavily made up look.
In the end, you should love the results. In fact, you should have a hard time choosing which four to use for your comp cards, the selection for the internet, and for your 8 x 10s. That will be the result of a good photography session and you will have found the best actor headshot photographer.
Before you get your comp card made up, make sure you find a really good pro headshot photographer in NYC or LA, and find some great headshot photos that you want to use to show as an example to your own photographer.
